 Diabetes Testimonial

The following is part of a testimonial that we have on file for public release by a man named Rocco (pictured): "As a result of a long-standing weight problem, I developed Type 2 diabetes many years ago. Before I came to Highwood, I had difficulty walking on flat ground for more than a few minutes because of breathing difficulties and sore feet. The change I experienced during my 11-day program was amazing:

"1. I was able to walk up and down hills for more than 5 hours in one day -- and 4 hours in one session -- without any discomfort.

"2. My blood sugars came down and the amount of insulin required by my body dropped by half...

"Needless to say, I found the Highwood experience an outstanding success in every part of my life".

Rocco also lost 4 kg in weight.

Details of Treatment

Highwood Health is pleased to report excellent results for most type 2 diabetics who come. Persons who are also overweight do especially well.

One of the options that Highwood can offer is for diabetics to have a major reduction or cessation of medication (including insulin) while they do their juice fasting. The resident doctor medically supervises this. Most of our type 2 diabetics have done this successfully and without problems. We have noticed that when this is done and guests restart their medication, they often need significantly less. Going off some medication during the fast also seems to aid weight reduction.

For success at Highwood overweight diabetics need to be prepared to do their best at exercising. This means regular walking or regular use of the exercycle. The other aspect has to do with meal portion size and buffet choices. Diabetics are advised on the GI scale of foods and low or medium GI foods are supplied. But some buffet items need to be avoided! The juice fast can be very beneficial for overweight type II diabetics. It is not recommended for underweight diabetics. If the fast is chosen then the guest must have their own blood sugar monitor. Highwood also has a monitor and will be regularly checking blood sugars. Medication reduction or cessation is usually mandatory if doing the juice fast.

Diabetics will be introduced to the use of specific anti-diabetic foods such as onion, long (snake) beans, alfalfa and others.
